What does AI actually do – and how can you use it wisely in your organisation?

What is AI really? How do machine learning and language models work? And how do you know what’s relevant, realistic and responsible in your own context?

AI is everywhere, but rarely well understood. Many organisations want to use it but lack the foundational knowledge to make sound decisions.

Pieter Buteneers – AI engineer, entrepreneur, founder of Emma Legal (the AI platform to automate legal due diligence), and former Director of Engineering at Sinch – will offer a technically clear, practically grounded session.

With Pieter Buteneers – AI expert, engineer and FBS alumnus

This open lecture is part of FBS’s research methodologies series, hosted by prof. Bart Van Looy.

What's it all about?
  • Why 'AI' is mostly machine learning – and how that works
  • How LLMs like ChatGPT are built, trained and evaluated
  • What fundamentally changed since 2022 (tech and culture)
  • What LLMs are good at – and where they fall short
  • Common mistakes organisations make when adopting AI
  • How to apply AI meaningfully and responsibly
Who should attend?

Professionals, policymakers, strategists and researchers who want to truly understand AI and make informed choices. This session builds on the Syensqo case earlier that afternoon, offering a critical and theoretical framework to approach AI consciously and sustainably.
